The Brachial Plexus

About the Project

For this project, I reconstructed a skeleton and skin model from CT scan data to clearly show the main branches that a make up of the brachial plexus around the neck and arms, while the arms are lifted.
Listed below are the types of software I used and the step by step process.

Invesalius

Reconstructed a skeleton and skin model from CT data using the software, Invesalius.

ZBrush

Once reconstructed, they were imported into ZBrush to be tidied up. This meant getting rid of any artifacts (such as the back stand behind the figure), filling in holes, hiding unnecessary floating bits, smoothing rough edges, adding detail (such as texture to the skull to creating a boney appearance, and pore-like bumps to the skin).

The formation of a brain with a spinal cord attached was made from scratch to help visualize the start of the brachial plexus.

Lastly, I chose base colors for all the models, before uploading into Keyshot.

Keyshot

Next, the models had to be exported into Keyshot to make them into high resolution 2D renders (still images).

Photoshop

The still images of the brain, skeleton, and skin models were imported into Photoshop. The background color was chosen as well as the final placement of the all the layers.
The skin layer needed to be modified the most with translucency to reveal other layers. This was done using the eraser tool.

Final Edit.png

I chose to magnify the Brachial Plexus for my project to challenge myself in understanding the complex pathways of the nerves related to raising of the upper limbs. The most difficult was investigating how the nerves wrap around the bones as they are lifted up.
In order to create a realistic and accurate depiction of the brachial plexus and the additional nerves in connection to it, I created sketches to help with the layout.

Illustrator

For the final design, I preferred the labelling and creation of nerves within Illustrator.
